Education for engineering standards, product development and quality control
Case study (Cláudia Fernandes & Luís Rocha)
The purpose of this paper is to provide insight on the role of youngsters’ education about engineering standards, product development and quality control for the development of industrial literacy and a qualified workforce. The empirical part of this paper will be developed according to the case study approach methodology and grounded on the hands-on project Think Industry New Generation (TING) in one particular activity – “Education about standardization” (EaS) for the 2013/14 edition. It were encompassed more than 700 youngsters with an age range from 12 to 17 years old in this out of school project, in a voluntary base. The concepts on metrology and quality control are part of the industrial literacy skills and are explored according to a pedagogical learning script starting on the subject of standardization. Everlasting mentality shift must begin at tender ages using methods with meaning for the target public.

Statistical process control – the importance of using calibrated measurement equipment
- case study (José Barradas & Marta Mendes)
These days, where competition between companies is great, it is essential that they hold the most optimized processes possible, ensuring the quality of products and services and reducing operational costs. Thus, the use of tools or methodologies to meet the performance of processes and facilitate the detection of problems in order to reduce the variability is essential to ensure their competitiveness. The Statistical Process Control (SPC), is one of the seven quality tools used in order to provide information for more effective diagnosis in the prevention and detection of defects and problems in the evaluated processes and, consequently, helping increase productivity and results of the company, avoiding waste, being of greatest importance to guarantee the quality of the company.

Approach to the calibration of calipers – ISO13385:2011 vs DIN862:1988 standards
(Isabel Perfeito)
In the context of dimensional metrology, the caliper, apparently one of the simplest measuring instruments is one of the most used in industry, in any of its sectors. Since a large number of these callipers are calibrated in accredited laboratories, these devices are part of the calibration work routine of dimensional metrology laboratories. Recently, due to the replacement of the calibration standard DIN862: 1988 for the ISO 13385: 2011, the calibration laboratories were forced to update their Accreditation Annex. The aim of this paper is to describe the main changes in callipers calibration based on the current standard (ISO 13385: 2011), in comparison with the discontinued standard (DIN 862: 1988), in order to assist the understanding of concepts, certificate validation and internal calibrations.
